Five ways to avoid Instagram account shut down
Periodically, cannabis account managers wake up to find their Instagram account deleted. With limited advertising avenues for cannabis, especially online, and the need to spread brand awareness in an increasingly competitive market having your brand’s IG account deleted is a big deal.
We have compiled five tips for keeping your feed compliant, effective and running!
1. Avoid images of people consuming cannabis.
The consumption of alcohol and tobacco in advertisements has been a big no-no for decades. It’s not a leap to assume cannabis advertisement has some of the same restrictions. Instead of featuring direct consumption, try to highlight the cannabis lifestyle and the products themselves.
2. Attempt to control the age of your audience.
While there is a limit to an account manager’s ability to control public account audiences, following are two things you can do: make sure your bio mentions the content is only for a 21+ audience; and be mindful about the audience that your hashtags may appeal. For example: #GirlScoutCookies may be your most popular strain, but it also has a pretty evident under 21 interest.
3. Do not appear to, and never sell from your page.
Instagram in a recent statement said:
“Instagram does not allow people or organizations to use the platform to advertise or sell marijuana, regardless of the seller’s state or country… Our policy prohibits any marijuana seller, including dispensaries, from promoting their business by providing contact information like phone numbers, street addresses, or by using the “contact us” tab in Instagram Business Accounts.”
Their statement does not mention including a website! Stay compliant and redirect your users to learn more about your products and where to purchase them by following the link in your bio!
4. Keep it classy.
While mainstream stoner culture is full of content that is flag worthy, you keep your feeds cannabis-focused, while focusing on information, high-end lifestyle and product images and quotes. Stay on the fringes of stoner culture and KEEP IT CLASSY.
5. Use an influencer program to promote your brand and page.
92% of marketers found influencer programs successful (a). Using mass influencer programs like Cannabeep gives your brand and message an audience spread over hundreds of influencer accounts, which have already cultivated a cannabis-focused audience. Your brand message will reach thousands of potential clients beyond your own current followers and you will keep a low shutdown risk for your account.
40% of people say they’ve purchased an item online after seeing it used by an influencer on Instagram (b). Programs like Cannabeep keep you up to date with data and statistics on conversions and the effectiveness of your campaign. These reports take the guesswork out of measuring the success of your content and the influencer’s reach.
Keeping your account compliant and under the radar, while building your brands awareness, doesn’t have to be rocket science! Just try to keep your audience age appropriate, stay on the edge of cannabis culture content, avoid showing the direct use of your product on your page, promote your website and not your location, and use a massive reach influencer program.
